Kueth

Family Background

Kueth was born in South Sudan. During the civil war, most of the schools were closed. Therefore, when Kueth was six years old, his mother decided that Kueth should go and live with an uncle in Ethiopia so that he could go to school there. His three younger siblings remained with his mother.

Kueth only has vague memories of his father. He has not been in contact with him in almost ten years and has no idea if he is alive.

Kueth now lives outside of Gambella with a 40 year old uncle who looks after him. The uncle cuts trees for a living. But times are tough as the income doesn’t go beyond one meal per day for the family.

Living situation

They share a small mud hut without electricity or water, located in a small gathering of huts, over two hours (by foot) away from Gambella. It is a long and strenuous walk and Kueth has to do this every day to go to school. But he does not mind at all. Sometimes a friend who lives nearby walks together with him and then they ask each other school questions during their time together.

Education and Ambition

From a very young age, Kueth has shown enormous dedication for his education. He leaves his house at 06:00 every morning to walk to school and he only comes home after 18:00. Most other children of his age would have long given up. But not Kueth. He is determined to reach high school, and then university.

His inspiration: Galileo Galilei. Kueth is very keen on sciences and hopes that he will be able to study engineering and discover new things!

Currently in Grade 7, Kueth scores an average of 92% and he ranks first out of a class of 98 students!!

Our Plan for Kueth

Kueth will join the EEF programme in summer 2020. In order for him to be able to fulfil his potential, we must find him a place to live nearer to the school (to be shared with one or two other eef students). This place will have small desk space and electricity so that they can study together, as well as mattresses to sleep on and some other basic items.

We will also provide him with

  • three meals per day: An egg, banana and bread (for breakfast), a traditional vegetable dish and occasionally meat (lunch) as well as their custom maze stew (dinner) which they will cook themselves.
  • Some new clothes each year
  • Study materials throughout his time at school.

Our support will be for grades 8 – 12.

After grade 8 (last year of primary school) there will be a review, based on his grades, to see if he will go to high school in Gambella, or if he will join our programme in Addis Ababa.

After grade 12 (last year of high school) he will go to university (our programme track record for university entrance is 100%) and we will continue to support him with a monthly allowance.
